The company that builds startups in public.
Downshift is a small, senior team. Senior engineers on keys, AI-native by default, public-by-default. The work is the work.
Why Downshift exists
Most non-technical founders end up spending $10-30K with offshore teams or no-code stacks before they realize they have a demo, not a product. The judgment they actually needed was missing the whole time. The team they hired never had skin in the game.
Downshift exists for that founder. We sit on the engineering side of the table, with co-founder-level judgment and no upfront equity ask. A pod of senior engineers, an estimate written down before anyone starts, and a production product at the end. Then we keep running it, or we hand it over with the code in the founder's repo.
We started running Public Build on top because the founder economy isn't equally funded. A real product idea with a real ICP shouldn't die because the cash isn't there yet. So a few selected founders each cycle get built with at no cash cost, in exchange for working in the open with us.
How we work
Small and senior, on keys
Downshift is a senior team operating with AI co-pilots. No juniors. No offshore handoffs. No account managers between you and the people writing code. Founders work directly with the same engineers who ship.
AI-native, not AI-marketed
Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, custom internal tooling. AI tooling is a default in every build, not a sales pitch on top. Every commit goes through review and tests. AI accelerates, it does not replace judgment.
Public by default
Our infra spend is published at /build-publicly/transparency/. Public Build founders get build receipts. The opposite of "trust us, we're working on it."
Founder-aligned, not vendor-aligned
We operate like co-founders. We say no to scope creep on your behalf. We push back on bad architecture even when it's faster to nod. The relationship outlasts the engagement.
What we say yes and no to
Yes
- An estimate written down before we start, and a new one before any scope change.
- Senior engineers on keys, co-founder-level judgment.
- You own the code, infra, IP, and accounts at every step.
- AI tooling as default. Claude Code in every repo.
- Public by default. Receipts published.
No
- No equity required. Cash-first, you keep 100 percent of the company.
- No hourly billing. Founders pay for outcomes, not time.
- No ghosting on launch. We finish what we start.
- No fabricated team headshots. The team is small and named.
- No "contact us for pricing" theater. The drivers that set the number are posted.
Why we run the Public Build initiative
Public Build is the answer to "what about the founder who can't fund a build yet?" A few founders each cycle are selected, at no cash cost, in exchange for working publicly with us across the build window.
Public-by-default isn't a marketing gimmick. The receipts page exists. The applications are read by a human. The bar is real, the door is open.
