CertifID: stopping wire fraud before the money moves.

One in four Americans reports being targeted by wire fraud during a real estate transaction. CertifID built the verification layer that stops it. Software, insurance, and recovery services across all 50 US states.

Live at certifid.com. $83.8M raised. Manuel Zamora was on the founding engineering team.

Section 01

The problem

Wire fraud is the single largest financial threat in real estate. Fraudsters intercept closing communications, impersonate title agents or attorneys, and redirect wire transfers to accounts they control. By the time anyone notices, the money is gone.

One in four Americans reports being targeted during a real estate transaction. The FBI's IC3 ranks real estate wire fraud among the costliest forms of cybercrime, with losses in the billions annually. Title companies, law firms, and real estate agents all face liability. Homebuyers lose their life savings.

Before CertifID, the industry relied on phone callbacks, email confirmations, and manual processes that didn't scale and were themselves vulnerable to social engineering. There was no automated, insured verification layer that could confirm identities and bank details before money moved.

Section 02

What was built

A verification platform that sits between closing parties and their wire transfers. Three products that cover prevention, protection, and recovery.

Identity Verification

Automated verification of identities, bank details, and business entities in minutes before any funds are sent. Replaces manual phone callbacks.

Wire Fraud Insurance

Up to $5M in direct coverage for verified wire transfers. Available across all 50 US states. Protection that travels with the transaction.

Fraud Recovery Services

Expert assistance recovering stolen funds when fraud does occur. Dedicated recovery team works with banks and law enforcement.

Title Company Integration

Built for title companies and law firms. Integrates into existing closing workflows without disrupting the transaction timeline.

Real-time Fraud Detection

Monitors for signs of email compromise, domain spoofing, and instruction tampering. Flags suspicious activity before the wire goes out.

Section 03

The engineering challenge

  • Email domain and header analysis

Compliance surface

  • 50-state insurance licensing

Manuel's role

Manuel Zamora was on CertifID's founding engineering team. This was a prior-career role before founding Downshift. His contribution was in the early-stage engineering that took the product from concept to production.

The experience building a security-critical, compliance-heavy, real-money platform shaped the engineering standards Downshift uses today: type safety from day one, bank-grade data handling, production infrastructure before the first demo, and the conviction that "it works on staging" is not the same as "it's production-ready."

Specific role details and dates are available on Manuel's LinkedIn.
